Zach Basford walked the whole of the Stevenson Way in one go!
I hiked the entire Stevenson Way all at once, solo, last summer (2023). It took me 19 days. 310 miles. Averaged 16.33 mi/day. What an amazing trip! Before I went, I zoomed in to all your maps and took screenshots of 3 km per page (width). I printed off the hundred or so map pages (including travel notes from your website) and used those as my guide as I hiked. I followed the route exactly. Having those maps was a tremendous gift to help stay exactly on track. Thank you so much for setting up the website the way you did with not only the interactive maps but also the route guide as well.
Favorite sections: Days 1-3 on Mull and Rannoch Moor from Kinlochleven to Balquhidder Most awe inspiring spot: Mountains south of Glencoe
Tips:
--Use a tent (not a bivy). You'll appreciate the protection from bugs and sheltered space to go through your backpack.
--Have waterproof hiking boots (not shoes). I spent hours and hours, day after day in ankle-deep muck. It is unavoidable. I was glad I had boots that were just high enough to keep the water out.
--Stock up on food for Rannoch Moor. It took me 5 hard days of hiking until I came to a town where I could get food again.
Interesting note:Â I hiked in late July & early August yet in some sections (especially on Mull) there was no evidence (hint of a trail, bent/broken vegetation, footprints, etc.) that anyone had been anywhere near the route in a long time (at least weeks, if not longer).Â
I recommend this hike. Simply amazing.
Sincerely,
